Description:

Inspired by the things he was inspired by... African, Japanese/Chinese fabrics and art... with a few twists!

The colours reminded me of Japanese Edo period bath robes - these were often decorated using a starch resist made, from rice, dipped in indigo and then stencilled to add colours such as red, pink and gold. I adapted the grouped swirls from a favourite design of the Blue H'mong of Laos know as 'grouped snails'. The circles of basket weave are symbolic of silk worm feeding baskets used in Japan. The narrow border is based on a Chinese knife wax resist from Guizhou.

moirarae

moirarae says: Traditional art always amazes me, certain motifs turn up all over the place. This spiral motif became even more appealing when I found out that it is known in Laos as 'Grouped snails' - I couldn't resist doing something with it! I agree - a Sarong made with the cotton voile for the summer - very chic!

hootena...

hootenannit says: Interesting that your inspiration was a bath robe - I was thinking what a beautiful long skirt or sarong it would make! I love the way your spiral-based motif manages to look Celtic, Asian, and Middle Eastern all at once.

moirarae

moirarae says: Matisse was great at taking traditional images and evolving them into something new/modern. In this design I aimed for something more traditional in appearance, with one or two intriguing and unexpected elements, that would have inspired and interested him. In short I wanted to design something he would have loved - something he would want to make reference to in his work.

fireflower

fireflower says: Well, if Henri doesn't want it, he can send it to me, because I love it! You've outdone yourself, Moira! The delicacy of the linework, the color balance, with the blue holding the bass notes, and the froth of white, sparkled by the coral and rose and green, is breath-taking ... a-a-ahhhhh ... I can hear it sing.
