Multani Quilt 2, red baby quilt.
I designed my Multani fabrics while living in Lahore in August 2012.
The fabrics and my Multani Quilts are all inspired by the frescoes, tile work, mosaics, and famous pottery of that ancient Indus River Valley city in Pakistan, Multan. Multani pottery and decorative masonry work on Mughal era and Islamic architecture are renowned for their saturated colors, particularly blues and greens. Motifs include floral patterns, trees, vines, fruit, and geometric shapes, as well as sweeping calligraphy. Multani blue pottery and tiles remind me of the Delft blue earthenware in Holland, the cobalt blue tiles of Turkey, and glazed ceramics of Italy: if you are attracted to any of these colors and motifs, then I think you will enjoy my Multani fabrics and quilts.
In designing the four quilts, I tried to compose them as to suggest the weathered and almost ruinous condition of many Indus Valley cultural heritage sites, sadly, including many magnificent shrines and gardens. My quilts suggest this degradation of the stone and ceramic work through patchwork construction and through my machine quilting patterns.
I like how quilts in homage to old ruins can be made to look distinctly modern.
