A floral design for a midcentury cocktail dress combining inspiration from furnishing fabric and fashion fabric designs of the 50's
This is my design for the midcentury cocktail dress design contest, hand drawn in pen and ink and coloured in photoshop, I tried to keep the essence of the kinda sketchy linear designs that were prominent on 50's interior fabrics, but keep the floral motives that were generally in use on the fashion fabrics of the time. A bit of a combined, bit of everything typically 50's design!!
mid century (1468),
vintage print (369),
50 s (206),

Fantastic line-work and great colours, Jo. Lovely design.
I think you achieved your aim (interiors + florals) and it really does have a 1950s feel while still feeling fresh and new, and the scale is good for the stage. It was great to see it in the mockup dress, and enjoyed reading your note too! Can't ask for more...
Such a cute dress Jo!
Totally retro, I love the roses and the colour choices too!! Good luck in the contest.
Wow, thanks for the fab comments Lucinda, Sheila, Victoria, Grace, Julia and Claire. I absolutely love the textile designs of the 50's (and 60's/70's as well) especially the interior furnishing fabrics of Lucienne Day, Sylvia Chalmers, Jacqueline Groag and Robert Stewart, so tried to capture the essence of that style whilst keeping in the traditional floral theme of the fashionable cocktail dresses of the day. So glad you all like it, although Claire I may need to buy you a new hat! hahahaa!!
Fabulous, this is my absolute favourite and will eat my hat if it's not in the top ten, perfect vintagey design but totally useable still, love it :)
Very original design and colour palette. Luck at the contest!
Very nice, and an adorable mock-up
Lovely... look forward to seeing what other colors you choose :)
Thanks for your lovely comments Rhonda, Amy, Virginie, Carina, Raven, Angela and Amy. Wish i'd had just a little more time just to tweak it a bit, but hey ho!! Been a complete whirlwind last couple of weeks, so eager to look at all the designs in this contest properly, one of my favourite themes. I've seen a few designs popping up in my activity that look so amazing...can't wait to check them out!! Got one more leavers ball to attend this arvo/tonite then should have some time to comment on everyone elses fabby designs yay!!!!
This is perfection!
Very nice illustrations! Love it :) xxx
The textured background looks great. Jo! I love the sketchy quality of the illustrations! Your design reminds me of fabrics that were in the dresses my mother and aunts wore during that era!
Fabulous Fifties Flowers design in repeat, so can be seen clearly, as can't really get an idea of the full design by seeing it in swatch view.

Thanks so much for the comments Kelly, Siya and Julie, bit of a rush this one actually, I really wanted to take my time and do a good one but just a ridiculous amount of stuff going on with the kids at the minute, my son is deputy head boy at his primary school so this last week has had so many things to attend, award shows, plays, talent shows, i've been making costumes and attending functions every day for the last 2 weeks.....crikey!!... been lots of fun though!!
This is beautiful, love the linework!
