The pomegranate is a strange beastie. Its crown shows it has intrinsic 6-fold symmetry but it is seldom fully fertilised in all carpels and hence the fruit generally develops with a 5-fold interior or even with only 4 irregularly distributed lobes. There are also some naming and religious confusions involving the pomegranate.
