Adapted from a vintage postcard. 50's-style "umbrella" skirt with multiple panels. Note that the petticoat in the image of the completed skirt is not part of the pattern. INSTRUCTIONS: Three panels and a waistband piece per yard (on Kona cotton). At the narrow end, each panel is approximately 6" wide when pre-shrunk, not counting the seam allowances. Buy enough yards for roughly 1.5 times your waist measurement. My waist is 38 inches, so I used 3 yards. Panels are about 13" at the bottom. 3 yards means a hem of 117". If you want it pouffier, buy more yardage, but be aware that the more panels you use, the more you will have to gather or pleat the skirt at the waist. Pre-shrink the fabric. Cut the pattern pieces out along the outside of the outlines. Iron. Using a 1/2" seam allowance, sew all the panels together along the sides, inserting a 6" zipper into one seam. If necessary, gather or pleat the skirt at the waist to fit. Cut enough of the waistband for your waist measurement plus 6". (If your waist is bigger than about 34", sew two waistband pieces together at the short edge and cut off the excess.) Attach waistband as usual, using whatever type of closure pleases you. Use a narrow hem for the slightly scalloped bottom edge of the skirt. Use the curved red line as a guide for turning the fabric, gently easing in the excess as you go. Turn and sew hem twice.
