Crinoids are "living fossils" and what we know as sea lillies and feather stars today. While there are a few hundred types of crinoids still found in the ocean, few have the stalks characteristic of the much more abundant and diverse varieties found in the fossil record that have long since gone extinct. They are echinoderms, relatives of the starfish and sea urchin.
