Description:

The extant hominidae (great ape) family - homo (human), pan (chimpanzee), gorilla and pongo (orangutan).

The extant hominidae (great ape) family - homo (human), pan (chimpanzee), gorilla and pongo (orangutan). Other members are extinct.

The shield is party per cross or into gules and sable. The quarters are charged with example species skulls and genus names. The cross is decorated with strands of DNA. The crest background is a partly peeled banana. Currently displaying a 4" shield repeat, scaled down from 9" with scope for other print scales in between or a fraction smaller.

sef says: I test-printed this at less than half-size (to get four 4" shields neatly onto a swatch rather than having the original 9" one not fit!) and all the lines still showed clearly. So this is another one which might be usable beyond the super-sized contest scales.

sef says: Hence my comment on the forum, a couple of weeks back, about having a really big family. ;-)

fireflower

fireflower says: I love this!!!! I'm the one in my family taking the broader view, and I love the broad view you've taken here. Not to mention poking fun at the separation-reinforcement of the usual "family crest" ... it's really all "we" when one gets right down to it.

sef

sef says: Thankyou. The "joke"/idea appealed to me right from the start. I just wasn't sure for a few weeks if I was going to get the time to do anything worthwhile with it. It would be a problem if the design had to be part of a collection - because there are so many other biological families to cover.

sef

sef says: The concept was somewhat inevitable when asking a scientist to think of family! :-D

su_g says: I second Glimmericks' remarks: bold and clever! Love the DNA and the banana and the whole concept! So glad you got the time to do this!

sef

sef says: I already had a couple of different banana ideas. They may or may not happen though. I'm generally not short of ideas (in all sorts of directions and fields). What I'm chronically short of is time to do everything. Eg this one nearly didn't happen because I had only had opportunity in the past to make sketches of a human skull from "life". So I had to rely on the internet to show me the skulls of the other great apes (in mere 2D) at short notice.

glimmericks says: Bold ... and clever. I like how you executed the banana, and the DNA motif was a brilliant touch. Can picture the banana popping up in future designs. Maybe a stylized fruit salad?

sef says: Do you think it's bold enough? ;-)
