My maiden name is a variant spelling (via Ellis Island) of what we think might be the same family name as Wacław Sierpiński - the mathematician who first mathematically described this fractal in 1915.
My dad is a chemist and thought about being a math professor; he introduced me to this fractal long ago when he was enchanted with making his own fractals on his first "home computer". We've always loved the Sierpiński triangle for the elegance and simplicity of both its form and its math, and I think of it as 'ours'.
