The history of Dahomey is filled with a wide variety of what we in the US would consider negative and horrific practices, including human sacrifice and war. But one cool thing about their history is their corps of female soldiers. They were trained with extreme discipline, and considered themselves changed into men. Instrumental in overthrowing French troops in the first Franco-Dahomean War, this corps of 4,000 women excelled in battle. It wasn't until the French obtained machine guns that Dahomey was finally put under french rule.
