In the old days, colour printing was very limited - eg to comics in weekend supplements. Layers of dots were used to apply cyan, magenta, yellow and black inks in different densities - amounting to 0%, 20%, 50% or 100%. Bright red would be 100% magenta plus 100% yellow. Bright green would be 100% cyan plus 100% yellow. Strong blue would be 100% cyan plus 100% magenta. It's still a sensible division of the colour space. It also makes a rather bright plaid!
