Description:

Pixie hats based on simple cone shapes in short or tall forms at various sizes. Pixie hats based on simple cone shapes have a couple of advantages over bell-shaped forms. They are easier to sew and they cope better with a range of head sizes. However, this does mean they only really perch on the head instead of fitting tightly on one correct head size. The choice of 5 points around the circumference (ie cone base) is merely the minimum (for ease of sewing!) which looks sensible. It's not an immutable number.

The 18" diameter circle (in 2 halves) makes a shallow cone which fits a small to average size head (up to 22" around). The 18" radius half-circle (in 2 quarters) makes a pointier cone which fits a larger head (up to 24") - for the chief pixie, perhaps! The 6" diameter circles are medium doll-sized ones.

To make each whole-circle hat:
• Cut out the printed area. No seam allowance is necessary for the easy sewing method.
• Fold the pointy circle in half, right sides together and matching designs together.
• Sew along the paired radial lines where design 1 changes into design 2.
• Turn inside out, so that one of the two conjoined cones encloses the other.
• Hem the pointy base of the cone by oversewing. Eg use pearlised translucent thread for a bit more fairy magic.

To make each half-circle hat:
• Cut out the printed area, leaving a seam allowance along the straight edge.
• Fold the pointy semi-circle in half, right sides together, to sew this seam. Trim it at the point of the cone thus formed, to avoid lumpiness later.
• Keeping right sides together, match up the different designs in separate halves instead. Sew through the seam, along the newly paired radii where design 1 changes into design 2.
• Turn inside out, so that one of the two conjoined cones encloses the other.
• Hem the pointy base of the cone by oversewing.

Warning: the currently uploaded file is designed for a 42" yard of Kona cotton. On a fat quarter, you get just 1 normal sized pixie hat and, on wider fabrics, 3 doll-sized patterns too. If you want to use a wider fabric type (eg 56" sateen or 54" linen-cotton canvas), ask for a different version of the file to be uploaded instead - with whatever combination of designs you prefer.

sef says: Probably just a little bit too much away with the fairies for many people's liking. ;-)

I'm not against the "go and look what an interesting thing I found" side of Pinterest. It's the straight copyright and intellectual property theft side which bothers me. At least one of my designs has allegedly been pinned a ludicrously large number of times without a single one being search-traceable back to here by reference. Which means the sole motive was theft each time. Honest people blog and link rather than copy. Pinterest panders to the worst in society.
