Red Alert: One fat quarter of this fabric is wide enough to go around a 20" head with a 1/2" seam allowance. If your measurement is longer, you will have to piece together two lengths of fabric, which are included in the fat quarter. If the head measurement is under 20", you will have enough material for at least two crowns. Revised April 12, 2012.

Thank you inscribed_here. I adore jewel-tones which makes your comment particularly gratifying.

Brilliant idea. This printed very nicely. I love how the 'gems' seem to have an inner glow. Very well done!
Thank you victorialasher. In the Kona Cotton, it is very comfortable to keep the hair out of your eyes without extra bulk. If you close it yo-yo style, the little opening acts like an air vent. When I am too hot, I soak the whole hat, wring it out, and put it on wet for refreshing coolness.
I think this would be a very useable hat; just subtle enough. I bet it would be lovely and warm done in the knit.
Thank you, pennycandy. I am excited about this idea and look forward to making more versions myself. At least three for the magi!
What a GREAT idea!
Su_g, the calculations for the crown of the hat needed simplification. When I realized one could eye-ball the measurement by using a rubber band, I was much relieved. Thank you so much for your encouraging feedback!
It does look fabulous & your directions give me confidence that I could make it, the rubber band is a good practical idea. End result: a glamorous hat that's a great addition to this collection!
Directions as they appear on the fabric:
Measure around head and add one inch for 1/2 inch seam allowance. Fold fabric right side together and sew side. Hem base. Use rubber band to gather top of crown to fit. Trim if needed. Turn crown right side out to hide rubber band.

April 2012 Revised fat quarter of Kona Cotton.
Thank you for the happy idea, rhondadesigns, I had not thought of birthday-theme crowns.
The finished "crown" looks fabulous! What a great hat for someone to wear for a special birthday party, or other significant event!
This simple version was gathered with a rubber band. A more finished look can be accomplished by folding down the top edge 1/2" and gathering with needle and thread.
