A Cut & Sew Pattern for a summery beachy 'bucket' tote bag.
This is my entry for the bag pattern contest. I had fun doing this one; I wanted to design the bag pattern from scratch, and also to get the full benefit of the cut & sew nature of the bag and design something where the pattern fills followed the shapes of the pattern pieces.... and this is what I came up with... A summery beachy 'bucket' tote. The finished bag is approx 16 x 14 x 4"; It has circular handles, is fully lined and has three pocket (one at either end, and one full width internal pocket). The bag fastens with a coordinating fabric covered button, and there are matching decorative buttons on the end pockets - see photos!!
To make this bag you will need fusible interfacing, blue thread, card or plastic to stiffen the base (4 x 12 1/2 "), and three 1" coverable buttons.

Loving the colours of this one! Good luck in the contes ^^

I think mum would love it - blue is her colour after all! and she always likes to have bags with lots of pockets. you might have to get her an iphone too though... I have had a recent spate of handbag-buying but what i would actually quite like are some fabrics for my next patchwork project... I am going to make a big quilt for the sofa, in dark reds, oranges, wine colours and maybe some dark brown bits here and there. maybe you could make me a yard filled with swatches of your kisses fabric (like the lining of the bag with all the little xs) in different colourways? I think it's just going to be made up of 3" squares so if the swatches had dimensions were multiples of 3.5" that would be very convenient! :) xxx
oh and Julie, I plan to add the matching clutch to this version too, after the contest. I only removed it as i ran out of time to write the instructions for that section before the contest started. I was surprised how well the clutch turned out, and it fits in the internal pocket of the bag perfectly when folded over!
Thank you so much Rhonda, Julie, Amy and Jennifer for your lovely comments, I'm so pleased you like my pattern :-D
Incredibly designed bag with amazing patterns! Very nice!
An amazing design, you have used your fabric so efficiently! I love the matching reversible clutch!
You have put this whole kit together with a great eye for detail and a flair for fun in fashion! Fantastic, Roz!
Thank you so much Isabella, Maria and Raven for your very kind comments. I had fun doing this, but spent an awful long time (and a few head aches) trying to squeeze all the bits on to 36 x 42"!
Beautiful bag! Goodness wow.
This is great, Roz. I love the cheery red lining. Your project images are fantastic, too.
Hey Judy, glad you like it... am thinking i might give it to mum for her 60th, what do you think?? In theory the bag is fully reversible, so you could make it either way out, but the pockets are best left where they are (i.e end pockets on the blue side as they are attached to the v-shaped end pieces before the bag side seams are sewn, and the lining has the v-shaped ends already attached to one side of the bag to save space and sewing. Also the full width pocket is lined in cream to make it easy to find things in the pocket so if you put this pocket on the blue side (easy to do) you'd be left with a random cream rectangle on the outside of the bag.... BUT am planning on making other versions with different colours/ patterns as that is the 'easy' bit, so am happy to take requests.... could make one for your birthday too ;-) hope all good with you, r.x
Thanks Rebecca and Diane for your lovely comments, made my day :-)
Wow! It's beautiful. I like that you included little bits from your other designs - i spotted the art deco beads :) Can you make it inside out too, with the pocket sewed to the blue side? I love the red lining and the pale inside of the handle! x
OMG Roz this is amazing!
This is sooo sweet and bright! I love it! :)
with the matching reversible foldover clutch on the 56" wide version of this design!
