I live around the corner from Tanhouse Lane in Alton. In the 1850s Fanny Adams and a few of her friends went to the meadows which were reached via Tanhouse Lane. Unfortunately Fanny was lured away from her friends with the promise of money and brutality murdered. This toile depicts the sweet innocence that was evident before this terrible event. It shows Fanny's friends, unsure of whether to leave Fanny with the man, it shows Fanny sitting in the hop field where she would meet her end and it shows Tanhouse Lane which has changed little since those times and still has the lane leading to the park.
