Liliuokalani, queen of Hawaii, born in Honolulu in 1838 was the first and only reigning Hawaiian queen and the last Hawaiian sovereign. before the monarchy was overthrown by the United States. Design imagery Butterfly Hair Pin: Queen Liliuokalani wore this jeweled butterfly in her hair. Mayflowers (official state flower of Massachusetts): Liliuokalani married John Owen Dominis, the son of a Boston sea captain. Key: After being imprisoned the Queen was forced to abdicate the Hawaiian throne. During her imprisonnement she made a quilt. She embroidered many symbols on the quilt, animals, flower and also this key. Heart Shaped Leaves: Liliukalani was a prolific composer and wrote many love songs including 'Aloha 'Oe' , a lover's goodbye. Iʻiwi bird: a symbol of Hawaii Bishop's ʻōʻō, Hawai'i mamo, Laysan honeycreeper, Greater ʻamakihi: Birds that Liliuokalani would have seen in her forests, but are now extinct. Plumeria and Spiral Giner: Flowers that were introduced to Hawaii and are now prolific Veiled Chameleon: An invasive species of chameleon that was recently introduced to Hawaii and threatens the balance of the forest ecosystem. Circling Sharks: in Hawaiian mythology an Aumākua is a family god, or deified ancestor which frequently manifested as animals such as sharks. A symbolic relatiohship exists between person and Aumākua, the personal guardians of each individual and their family. I imagine Liliuokalani, represented by the butterly pin as being surrounded by these guardians, the circling sharks, at the time of her imprissonment. I wonder at how she sustained her strength and personal power, even as she and her people were threatened.
