This is the device for Gil-Gilad, the founder of the Kingdom of Lindon around the Gulf of Lhûn and the Blue Mountains and the sea. His name means starlight or star of radiance in Sindarin or Noldorin. This was a character in Tolkien's stories about the history of Middle Earth. Tolkien drew a device on an envelope dated from December of 1960, and labeled it Gil Gilad.
