The data's in the strata! The history of the earth is written in the rocks below us. Stratigraphy is the branch of geology that deals with the order and relative position of strata layers and their relationship to the geological time scale. By figuring out the age and relative positions of fossils buried in the earth scientists have been able to tell the story of the worlds before us. The basic rule of thumb is that the deeper you go the older the rocks are, hence trilobites are much deeper than the dinosaur bones. It's all about the layers!
