About the Design

Realistically drawn trilobites in all their diverse, prehistoric glory!

Trilobites are an extinct group of segmented marine creatures that thrived in the oceans for nearly 300 million years before they vanished forever at the end of the Permian era. With over 20,000 described species (so far!) their diversity is overwhelming. I’ve never tired of drawing their elegant forms. They look so ancient yet have a weird kind futuristic look to them as well. Fun facts: the biggest trilobite was 28 inches long, they were probably the first animals to ever develop complex eyes, they were segmented into three regions from head to tail: the cephalon, or head region, separated from the thorax, which was followed in turn by the pygidium, or tail region. Their exoskeleton was also divided length-wise into three lobes Nothing like them exists today. They are, however, related to today's horseshoe crabs and spiders. So every time I see a spider scurrying across my floor I think of them as wayward land roaming trilobite cousins!
