established by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation in
2014 as a way to celebrate the tallest animal in the world. Giraffe Day takes place during the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere on the longest day or night of the year (depending on which hemisphere you live in). Fun Facts: No two giraffes have the same coat pattern, like human fingerprints. A group of giraffes is called a “tower.” The four main species have a distinctive style of spot patterns. The Masai Giraffe has spots that are more ragged, resembling an oak leaf. The Reticulated Giraffe has spots in a pattern that resemble the bricks in a wall. The Northern Giraffe has a yellow and black body that is easily hidden in its environment. The spots on a Southern Giraffe are almost star shaped. Happy World Twiga Day! (The Swahili word for giraffe is twiga.)
