Hildegard von Bingen 1098 - 1179 There are more surviving chants by Hildegard than by any other composer from the entire Middle Ages. Hildegard was a nun gifted with broad knowledge. She founded her own abbey, created her own language, wrote theological, botanical, and medicinal texts, as well as letters and poems. Today she is best known for her sacred monophony compositions and her work is as well the most recorded sacred music in modern history. Her most famous work Ordo Virtutum is a written musical drama consisting of 82 different melodies. Her work is the earliest known morality play and is also in some occasions considered the first written opera.
